character solidifying

27. How do they relate to their appearance? How do they wear their clothing? Style? Quality?

Layne doesn’t really pay much attention to his appearance or fashion wise. He dresses up well, makes himself nice and handsome when he goes and teaches. White button down shirt and a suit jacket but no tie. Suit slacks and nice shoes too. Depending on the verse, he teaches at a really nice school so he cleans up even more. He’s fairly stylish but doesn’t care much for how people see him. Outside of school, if he’s going out, he wears dress slacks or really nice jeans and a nice, plain shirt. If he’s staying in, he wears torn jeans or whatever’s comfortable for him.

The seasons are different for him. If it’s warm out, he rolls his button up sleeves in school or wears a tee shirt outside. If it’s even the slightest bit cold out or there’s a chill to the wind, you’ll almost always find him in a larger knit or fluffy sweater. Usually his sweaters are like this or this. But in or out of school, he’s usually wearing it during the fall or winter. He usually buys good quality clothes but there’s a lot of time in between his buying ‘sprees’. His clothes have to be torn or worn down for him to get new clothes. He doesn’t find clothing to be a huge priority to buy so those things will be done months apart.

42. What does your character want most? What do they need really badly, compulsively? What are they willing to do, to sacrifice, to obtain?

Well, there are a couple of things that he wants most in the world. To be comfortable in his own body is one thing. It’s a great thing for him but, as the years have gone on and he’s had the therapy and surgeries, he doesn’t focus on it as much. He’s comfortable with himself at this point in his life and honestly just wants to be with someone, though. Usually that’s short term and he’s very comfortable with playing around and just having one night stands.

But if we’re talking about compulsive urges or sacrificing things, we zoom in more on his disorder. He’s a very aggressive person and will lash out at people both verbally and physically. Sometimes the urge just comes upon him - sometimes it’s triggered by something unimportant. But the anger is something he can’t control and it almost hurts when he tries to. He’s sacrificed his time and his health just to have an outlet to lash out on, hence the underground fights. He sacrifices his job when he does these illegal things but hitting someone, beating them to a bloody pulp and letting his anger out is the only thing that helps. Hell, the mood stabilizers do something but they don’t get rid of the energy he needs to unleash. He needs the fighting or he needs an outlet for his anger. It’s terrible how much his anger rules his life.
